Thom loved Christmas and always proclaimed that it was a magical time of year. A mountain stream cascades over an array of stones framing a rusting wooded cabin, nestled between the trees. A fireplace warms the living rooms and illuminates the porch. As Mickey Mouse hands Minnie Mouse a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a thankful Minnie throws her arms around Mickey’s neck – thanking him for such a wonderful day in New York City.

The day is coming to and end. While the sun creeps low beneath the skyline and pierces through the already changing red and orange autumn leaves, the familiar “Kinkadian” lamp posts begin to flicker and light-up throughout the park. But the day isn’t over yet, as Mickey has one more surprise for Minnie: a horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse join hands on “Sweetheart Bridge.” Has Mickey come courting to Minnie’s home? Surrounded by a flower-filled countryside, love appears to be in the air. As in life, love is the bridge that brings people together and turns two lives into one. We hope you are reminded of the gift of love in Mickey and Minnie – Sweetheart Bridge.

I believe that the heart of worship knows no boundaries. Any prayer offered with sincere belief – however humble the surroundings or circumstances – is joyously received by God. And yet, there are places of worship like this tranquil stone chapel I came upon during a ramble in the Smoky Mountains, which must be especially pleasing in God’s sight. Prayer offered here will flow Heavenward just as surely as God’s manifold blessings cascade to Earth like Streams of Living Water.

In this peaceful kingdom, all of nature gathers in praise of God’s glory. The stone walls of the chapel seem to grow out of the Earth itself, while the pristine waters of the stream cascade from an ineffable distance. Deer, birds, rabbits, even a frog – creatures of Earth, water, and sky – gather in humble and silent witness to the unity and harmony of the creation.

Graceful trees shelter and shade this cloistered spot as a curious squirrel observes the revelry from his perch upon a limb. And over all, like a radiant umbrella, the glorious vault of Heaven unfolds another glistening morning. There are scenes in nature so graciously constructed, so sublime, that they become – in essence – parables in wood and water and stone. The duty of the artist is to witness with a loving heart and to record with a sure hand and a truthful eye. That is what I hope I’ve done in Streams of Living Water – a scene where God allows us to glimpse His loving kindness.

As a classic medium, painting has given me the chance to celebrate classics of American culture. I’ve painted the fabled mansion of Elvis Presley, the towers of the Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline of San Francisco. I’ve even set up my easel in theme parks and palaces of American sports in my search to commemorate bits of history. Boston’s Fenway Park™ is an example of history in the making — it is one of the ultimate shrines of baseball.

Fenway Park is the oldest Major League™ ballpark which opened in 1912. The towering Green Monster™ wall looms over a short left field; Pesky Pole in right field yields the shortest homers in the majors. A lone red seat in right field marks the landing place of Ted Williams’ mighty 1946 shot.

I brought my watercolors to the park for the clinching Game 7 of the 2007 ALCS™. Returning to California, I translated the original study into a colorful suggestion of energy and detail. Then with layer upon delicate layer I built up the painting. First acrylic to add texture and toning, then transparent glazes of oil color followed by broad impasto strokes.

I hope the final result captures the energy of the moment. Though there is nothing like being there in person, hopefully my Fenway Park can remind many baseball fans of the historic 2007 World Series™.

No one ever forgets their first visit to Yankee Stadium – I certainly remember mine. The color, the noise, and the nearness of history… the spectacle takes your breath away.

And now, in 2008, the greatest cathedral to the game of baseball, is about to close its doors forever. I could not let such a historic moment pass without honoring it in my way. And so, Yankee Stadium. This is the original Yankee Stadium – the house that Ruth built – with its cavernous center field and its statues to the immortal Bronx Bombers. A colorful crowd packs the stands, and the Yankees of yore take the field.

Because this is a distant view, you can people the field with Yankee heroes of your choosing. Could that be Lou Gehrig on first base? Babe Ruth in right field? Joe DiMaggio patrolling center? Or maybe it’s Mickey Mantle in center and Roger Maris in right. It could even be contemporaries – Derek Jeter at short and A-Rod at third. For eighty-five years, some of the greatest players in the game have called Yankee Stadium home. Now you can bring this Field of Dreams into your home.

“I left my heart in San Francisco…”

So says the classic ballad, yet what is it about the fabled City by the Bay that so strongly tugs at the heart strings? I will attempt to answer that question with a new series of paintings – of which this is the first.

My passion for San Francisco should be evident to all. After all, I’ve done nearly twenty images so far for publication that celebrate my beloved City by the Bay. Yet looking back on all these images, I have yet to document a setting that is as quintessentially “San Francisco” as my newest work. We can almost hear the clanging of bells as a cable car makes its way ponderously up the street while colorful vehicles dodge to and fro on the congested pavement. Street musicians ply their trade as a makeshift audience gathers, and two lovers stroll arm-in-arm beneath an umbrella. At the far left the towers of a cathedral lend a timeless presence while in the distance, the Coit Tower and the picturesque monoliths of the bridge stand guard over the glistening bay. An Italian flag above a chop suey parlor bears testimony to the cultural diversity of my favorite city, and the ever present wisps of fog lend an enchanting mood.

As I worked, I wanted so much to enter The Heart of San Francisco that I even posed myself astride my vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle making my way up the steep incline of the boulevard!
