There is nostalgia in childhood; the security of a family holiday tradition and in the adventure of railway travel. In this homecoming, family and friends are reunited for the holidays. It is a community event in Lionelville when the train arrives and the celebration begins. Indeed, I smile when I say, “All Aboard for Christmas!”

The excitement of the railway is ingrained in the American experience of travel. It is what opened the west to the east as part of our country’s manifest destiny. It is a fundamental part of our popular culture…who has not dreamed of riding the Orient Express or the iron horse of the American plains? And, it is a part of my own “growing up” as my most favorite of all childhood Christmas gifts. As a boy, I received my first Lionel electric train set under a yuletide tree and still delight in the memory of its set-up and of the imagined adventures I had on those scaled-down tracks. For a child, there is nothing as exciting as the dream of faraway places and the adventures in travel one might have to reach them. For those young at heart, the beat of the rail as the train gains speed brings the excitement of travel and the emotional warmth of homecoming. Some months ago, I unveiled a painting entitled The Light of Freedom, which portrayed a dramatic American flag unfurled over the New York City skyline. Old Glory symbolizes, for me, the indoitable American spirit, the passion for freedom, the pride and the abundant blessings that have characterized our nation. The response to the painting was gratifying. Not only was the painting extremely popular as a symbol of patriotism, but a special charitable edition helped raise $1.5 million for relief efforts sponsored by The Salvation Army. I was also intrigued to discover that many collectors asked if I could create a reiterpretation of this painting celebrating other American cities. This idea stuck with me, and gave way to America’s Pride.

This first painting in my new Flags Over America Collection, America’s Pride, features the same dramatic sky and waving flag seen in my previous painting, while below I pay tribute to the most patriotic of all American cities – our nation’s capitol. In my painting, I have depicted the Washington, D.C. skyline with lights glittering as evening approaches. The Capitol Building is illuminated, as is the  Washington Monument, while cherry blossoms catch the last rays of sunlight in the foreground. There is no doubt that for all citizens of the United States, our nation’s capitol truly is America’s Pride.

Step foot into a crisp autumn evening at Apple Hill. The light fall breeze, coupled with the bountiful harvest of pumpkins and colorful mums lining the pathway inspire feelings of serenity and comfort, only found on a tranquil Autumn evening. As the sun sets, brilliant colors of gold, scarlet, lavender, and blue paint the sky and reflect upon the transforming landscape and foliage. Autumn memories of picking apples from the trees and walking through the pumpkin patch looking for just the right pumpkin are captured in Autumn at Apple Hill. 

In the distance you can see the quaint village where you’ll find the bounty of Autumn: candied apples, homemade applesauce, apple butter, apple fritters and turnovers, and fresh pumpkin and apple pie.

Whether pitted against the backdrop of inclement weather or radiant with approving light, for one hundred years the race has captivated the imagination, beckoned future racers, and inculcated itself as one of the greatest sporting events in history. It is a staple of every Memorial Day weekend and as American as any tradition. Yet this year – more than any other – it stands tall as a testament to the resiliency of its fans and participants to honor such lofty traditions irrespective of challenge. For one hundred years we have come to witness the harnessing of destiny, the creation of champions, and the securing of an indelible legacy!

As I painted my tribute to this amazing race, I was moved by the imprint of time on this event. Two years earlier, I memorialized the 100th Anniversary of this storied track with my image entitled Indy Excitement, 100 Years of Racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway®. In that tribute, I painted the perspective from the multitudes of fans watching as their favorite drivers sped through the oval. I honored the history of the event with time-sequenced cars being serviced in the pits, from oldest to most current. Yet in this image I wondered at the thrill of viewing the race at track level where each of these amazing warriors would engage in the challenge of winning this epic race. I paid tribute to a century of competitors with yesteryears car racing against today’s elegant machines. Along the track, the smoke and dust reminiscent of one hundred years of racing billows as cars round the oval towards the renowned-checkered flag. Adjacent to the track, fans spanning generations and attired in appropriate garb, gather collectively willing their champions to victory all the while feeling the sonic impact of each lap and wincing at the roar of passing cars. In the horizon, sunlight gently adorns the clouds as sun approvingly sets on this year’s coronation of Indy’s latest champion…what a legacy is this greatest of races. Kudos, Indy, for one hundred years of thrills slowly and annually acquiescing to the storied checkered flag!
