Carmel, Dolores Street
As a young boy, I used to have a paper route in Placerville, California – but then I used a bike. Here, I proudly put Nanette and I on the “Just Married” moped, riding down the streets of Carmel. Just out of sight on the left side of this composition is an artist, painting away at the beauty of this small coastal city. On the right you’ll find the famous Tuck Box Tea Room, where all the locals go. I’ve even added in an art gallery commonly found in Carmel – Arthur’s Gallery – located right next door to this English tea room.
The mood on Delores Street is a combination of timelessness and hustle-bustle, and I tried to capture these aspects in my latest tribute to this seaside village this side of Britain. In order to make everything fit the way I envisioned it, I did widen Dolores Street in order to incorporate all I wanted to in Carmel, Dolores Street and the Tuck Box Tea Room. The streets here can be very narrow! Finally you may notice the older model cars and a flower vendor I’ve added for nostalgic reasons. Plus I love the European flair this adds to my composition – hopefully you will as well. I hope this Carmel painting will bring a bit of the charm and energy of one of America’s most quaint villages to people all over!
Interestingly enough, as I was at work on this new Carmel, Delores Street and the Tuck Box Tea Room I received word that my earlier Carmel painting – Carmel, Ocean Avenue on a Rainy Afternoon – had completely sold out. On further discussions with my publisher, I was gratified to lear5n that my first Carmel painting had been popular everywhere, not just in the region of Carmel. This proves my long held belief that beauty is universal, no matter what the specific location is. I hope my newest Carmel painting will bring a bit of charm and energy of one of America’s most quaint villages to people all over, whether they come to Carmel or not!
- Thomas Kinkade and his wife Nanette are featured proudly on the moped in the foreground in his painting, Carmel, Dolores Street and the Tuck Box Tea Room.
- Note that an artist is painting on the left side of Carmel, Dolores Street and the Tuck Box Tea Room, and on the right side of the composition is the famous Tuck Box Tea Room – a local favorite.
- Thom used his artistic license to widened Dolores Street as the streets in Carmel can be very narrow.
- Carmel, Dolores Street and the Tuck Box Tea Room has older model cars and a flower vendor for nostalgic reasons, which also add the European flair Thom so loves.
