Boston
Boston is a city for walking! One of the delights of my last trip to Boston were the long walks with my wife Nanette and our two-year-old daughter Merritt, in her stroller along the leafless lanes of Boston Common at dusk. A wet storm front was breaking up overhead one chilly evening when I got the inspiration for Boston, An Evening Stroll Through the Commons. The sweet, warm fragrance of the candied peanuts roasting in the sidewalk vendor’s cart and the glowing lights make the city of Boston one of my favorite subjects to paint.
- Thomas Kinkade’s Boston, An Evening Stroll Through the Commons is depicted of one of Thom’s favorite strolls along the Massachusetts’ Boston Commons and the Public Garden – which is famous for it’s “swan boats.”
- You can see Park Street Church in the center of the painting with the John Hancock building in the background. The buildings, while real, are not actually geographically situated as Thom depicted in Boston – artistic license at work.
- Norman Rockwell is included in Boston – happily smoking a pipe and walking his dog. Thom also included the late presidential couple John F. and Jackie Kennedy, walking up the center of Boston.
- Thom loved the fragrance of the candied peanuts roasting in the sidewalk vendor’s carts, and so he included one in Boston and named it “Merritt” after his eldest daughter.
